Proto-brown Dwarf Disks as Products of Protostellar Disk Encounters
نویسنده
چکیده
The formation of brown dwarfs via encounters between proto-stars has been confirmed with highresolution numerical simulations with a restricted treatment of the thermal conditions. The new results indicate that young brown dwarfs (BDs) formed this way are disk-like and often reside in multiple systems. The newly-formed proto-BDs disks are up to 18 AU in size and spin rapidly making smallscale bipolar outflows, fragmentation and the possible formation of planetary companions likely as have recently been observed for BDs. The object masses range from 2 to 73 Jupiter masses, distributed in a manner consistent with the observed sub-stellar initial mass function. The simulations usually form multiple BDs on eccentric orbits about a star. One such system was hierarchical, a BD binary in orbit around a star, which may explain recently observed hierarchical systems. One third of the BDs were unbound after a few thousand years and interactions among orbiting BDs may eject more or add to the number of binaries. Improvements over prior work include resolution down to a Jupiter mass, self-consistent models of the vertical structure of the initial disks and careful attention to avoid artificial fragmentation. A Numerical Study of Brown Dwarf Formation via Encounters of Protostellar Disks
The formation of brown dwarfs (BDs) due to the fragmentation of early-stage proto-stellar disks undergoing pairwise encounters was investigated. High resolution allowed the use of realistic, flared initial disk models where both the vertical structure and the local Jeans mass were resolved, preventing numerical enhancement or suppression of fragmentation. The results show that objects with mass...
متن کاملAlma Observations of Ρ-oph 102: Grain Growth and Molecular Gas in the Disk around a Young Brown Dwarf
We present ALMA continuum and spectral line observations of the young Brown Dwarf ρ-Oph 102 at about 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm. We detect dust emission from the disk at these wavelengths and derive an upper limit on the radius of the dusty disk of ∼ 40 AU. The derived variation of the dust opacity with frequency in the mm provides evidence for the presence of mm-sized grains in the disk outer regions....
متن کاملThe Structure of Brown Dwarf Circumstellar Disks
We present synthetic spectra for circumstellar disks that are heated by radiation from a central brown dwarf. Under the assumption of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, our models yield scaleheights for brown dwarf disks in excess of three times those derived for classical T Tauri (CTTS) disks. If the near-IR excess emission observed from brown dwarfs is indeed due to circumstellar disks, then t...
متن کاملThe Birth of High Mass Stars: Accretion and/or Mergers?
The observational consequences of the merger scenario for massive star formation are explored and contrasted with the gradual accumulation of mass by accretion. In high density proto-star clusters, envelopes and disks provide a viscous medium which can dissipate the kinetic energy of passing stars, greatly enhancing the probability of capture. Protostellar mergers may produce high luminosity in...
متن کاملExploring Brown Dwarf Disks
We discuss the spectral energy distribution of three very low mass objects in Chamaeleon I for which ground-based spectroscopy and photometry as well as ISO measurements in the mid-infrared are available (Comerón et al. 2000; Persi et al. 2000). One of these stars (Cha Hα1) is a bona-fide brown dwarf, with mass 0.04–0.05 M⊙. We show that the observed emission is very well described by models of...
